Freighter Hits Pier In Panama

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

September 6, 2000

The Maltese-flag bulk carrier Fortuna Europa collided with pier no.14 of the Balboa-Hutchinson terminal, Panama, on Tuesday after experiencing steering/engine problems, Reuters reported. Substantial damage was sustained to both the 26,849 dwt vessel and the jetty. The accident happened as the ship, which was carrying a cargo of fertilizer, was passing Balboa on its way to sea, still under the control of a Panama Canal pilot.
