VPS: The Power of Precision Bunker Quantity Surveys
In the high-stakes world of marine fuel procurement, where average deliveries can exceed $1 million, precision and accountability are everything. Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) has been conducting Bunker Quantity Surveys (BQS) since 1987 and has delivered close to 200,000 surveys across the globe. In a recent analysis of 10,000 VPS surveys, results show that a single vessel could save up to $145,000 per year by identifying short deliveries, detecting density discrepancies, and properly measuring remaining onboard fuel (ROB).
Singapore Marine Bunker Sales Dip in First Half of 2025
Sales of marine bunker fuel in Singapore dipped slightly in the first half of 2025, official data showed on Monday, as shipping uncertainties in the wake of global tariffs capped demand, particularly in the first quarter.Total sales at the world's largest refuelling hub for ships stood at 26.98 million metric tons in January to June this year, dipping 1% from 27.19 million tons in the same period last year, data from Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority showed. Conventional fuel sales…
Tighter Emissions Regulations, Slower Economy to Soften Marine Fuel Demand
Stricter environmental regulations and slower global economic growth will soften marine fuel demand in the coming years, the International Energy Agency said in its annual report on Tuesday.Marine fuel sales jumped last year due to Red Sea disruptions that made shipping companies take longer routes. But demand for those fuels, also called bunkers, could flatline at around 5 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024-2030, because of weak underlying shipping growth and rising costs from tougher maritime environmental standards…
Marine Fuel Sales at Fujairah Port Hit Three-Month Low
Marine fuel sales at the United Arab Emirates' Fujairah port hit a three-month low in May, data showed, while market sources said they are monitoring the situation in June as conflict flares between Israel and Iran, heightening regional tensions. Bunker sales, excluding lubricants, totalled 614,296 cubic metres (about 608,000 metric tons) at the Middle Eastern bunker hub in May, based on Fujairah Oil Industry Zone (FOIZ) data published by S&P Global Commodity Insights. The volumes were down 8.2% from April and by 0.2% from May last year.
Industry Partners Complete STS Ammonia Bunkering Pilot off Western Australia
The successful completion of the first-ever ship-to-ship transfer (STS) of ammonia at anchorage in Western Australia, as part of the maritime decarbonization initiative led by Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD), has marked a major milestone in paving the way for ammonia as a viable marine fuel.Under the supervision of the Pilbara Port Authority (PPA), the pilot took place within the anchorage area of Port Dampier, simulating real-world bunkering conditions and demonstrating…
ABS Publishes Safety Insights for Ammonia as a Marine Fuel
How does ammonia behave when it leaks in an engine room? How does a cloud of escaped ammonia disperse during bunkering operations? These and many other critical safety questions that must be understood if ammonia is to become widely adopted as a marine fuel are addressed in ABS' latest research.Safety Insights for Ammonia as a Marine Fuel brings together the findings of advanced ABS research into the performance of ammonia on board.ABS performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD)…

CIMAC Releases FAQs For Methanol as Marine Fuel
CIMAC WG 7 Fuels has released a new guideline titled “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - ISO 6583:2024: Methanol as a Fuel for Marine Applications – General Requirements and Specifications.”With the publication of ISO 6583:2024 in November 2024, the first standard for methanol as a marine fuel, numerous questions were expected to arise. Consequently, ISO/TC 28/SC4/WG18 requested CIMAC WG 7 Fuels to support the standard and the marine industry by creating a FAQ document. CIMAC WG 7 Fuels formed a sub-group…
B30 Marine Fuel Tanker Transport OKd in Singapore
Licensed bunker tankers operating in the Singapore port will be allowed to carry and deliver up to 30% blended marine biofuel (B30) from Friday, a circular from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) showed.Conventional tankers were previously allowed to carry a maximum of 24% blended biofuel. The move was in line with an update to the latest requirements for carriage of biofuel blends by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), the MPA circular said. However, bunker suppliers and craft operators will still be required to seek approval from th
US DOE Gives All Clear for Use of LNG as Marine Fuel for Vessels
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has announced an order that removes barriers for the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as marine fuel to power vessels. The order issued by DOE modifies a prior order issued to JAX LNG under the previous administration that asserted new oversight for the use of LNG to power marine vessels, also known as LNG bunkering.“Today’s action is a significant step in reducing regulatory burdens and helping this important segment of the LNG market continue to grow…
Marine Fuel Sales Soar After Red Sea Diversions
Global marine fuel sales jumped in 2024 after attacks by Yemen's Houthis starting in late 2023 prompted most shipping companies to divert vessels around southern Africa rather than through the Red Sea, according to data and analysts.Singapore bunker volumes logged fresh highs of 54.92 million metric tons in 2024, or about 955,000 barrels per day (bpd), while sales at United Arab Emirates' Fujairah posted the first annual uptick after a downtrend for several years.Rotterdam marine fuel sales rose 12% in the first quarter of 2024 to 2.16 million tons, or about 38,000 bpd from the previous three

Japanese Group Sees Carbon Recycled Methane as Zero-emission Ship Fuel
Ship Carbon Recycling Working Group of Japan's Carbon Capture & Reuse Study Group has said that carbon recycled methane produced by methanation technology can be recognized as zero-emission ship fuel.Methanation has been described as a technology for synthesizing methane, the main component in natural gas, by causing a chemical reaction between hydrogen and CO2 in a reactor vessel filled with a catalyst. It uses emitted CO2 separated and captured from industrial facilities. As the CO2 generated when combusting synthesized methane is considered to be offset by the separated and captured CO2…
Demand for Oil-based Marine Fuels to Fall as Ships Cut Emissions
Global demand for oil-based marine fuels is set to fall in the next three decades as stricter carbon emissions rules for the shipping industry kick in and alternative fuel use climbs, consultancy Wood Mackenzie said on Friday. The U.N.'s International Maritime Organization (IMO) is set to formally adopt energy efficiency regulations in June that aim to reduce the carbon footprint of new and existing ships by 40% by 2030 compared with 2008 levels.By 2050 the IMO aims to reduce the…
China: INE, PetroChina to Deliver Marine Fuel Overseas

UN's IMO Approves Ban on Heavy Ship Fuel in Arctic after July 2024
The United Nations shipping agency on Friday approved a ban on the use of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic region in a move criticized by green groups which said loopholes will allow many vessels to keep sailing without enough regulatory control.Antarctic waters are protected by stringent regulations, including a ban on heavy oil fuel (HFO) adopted in 2011, even though no cargo moves through the turbulent southern waters. For the Arctic, the rules have been looser. In a virtual session…
