Christopher Columbus Replica Flagship Sets Sail in London

A replica of Christopher Columbus's flagship Nao Santa Maria opened to public at London's St. Katharine Docks Marina on Thursday (May 29).The original ship was one of the three used by Columbus's crew in 1492 when he discovered territories in the Caribbean and the Americas.The 93 feet replica carries the Spanish flag as the Italian explorer's voyage was sponsored by Spanish monarchs. In a landmark event, a reconstructed 5th-century wooden stitched ship was launched into the waters of the Mandovi River in Goa. This endeavor, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy, and Hodi Innovations Pvt. Ltd., is a step in reviving India's ancient maritime traditions. Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has been instrumental in this project, ensuring that while the vessel retains its historical design, it also meets contemporary safety and design standards.

1924 Time Capsule Shows Navy's Newport Presence

A century-old time capsule, buried in 1924 to commemorate Newport’s naval history, was recently unearthed and opened in a live event at the Newport Public Library. Originally placed under Settlers’ Stone at the Naval Training Station on Coasters Harbor Island, the capsule was a joint effort between the city of Newport and the U.S. Navy.The discovery was made in 2021 by Naval War College Museum researchers, who used ground-penetrating radar to confirm its location.
