Fuel Spill on the Mississippi River

A vessel transiting Lock and Dam 27 on the Mississippi River near Granite City, Mo. was reportedly damaged, rupturing a fuel tank and leading to a fuel spill, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

 
As a result of the spill, the Mississippi River is closed at Lock and Dam 27 until cleanup operations are complete. The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to the incident.
 
The vessel’s fuel tank holds approximately 20,000 gallons, which is said to have been contained in the lock and dam.
 
The incident’s cause is under investigation.
