The construction of Captain Arctic, a 69-meter near-zero-emission exploration vessel designed for sustainable cruising in polar waters, has reached a major milestone as its hull was completed by Goltens Dubai, marking the start of final outfitting and integration work.

The vessel, owned by French company SELAR and built in collaboration with Chantier Naval de l’Océan Indien (CNOI) and Goltens Dubai, represents a major step in the integration of renewable energy systems into modern expedition ship design.

The Captain Arctic combines wind propulsion and solar energy to cut carbon emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional vessels of similar size. The ship’s rigid sails, standing 35 meters high and covering 2,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels, can retract in harsh weather conditions and are designed to endure the Arctic’s extreme environment.

When wind propulsion is unavailable, the vessel’s dual propeller shafts function as hydro-turbines, converting water flow into electric energy to power onboard systems. Additional sustainability measures include a reverse osmosis system for freshwater generation, a pellet boiler utilizing recycled wood waste for heating, and a zero-waste management policy that converts organic food waste and treated gray water into reusable resources.

“The successful launch of the Captain Arctic underscores Goltens’ leadership in delivering practical engineering solutions that advance maritime sustainability. This vessel is not only a technological triumph but also a symbol of what can be achieved when innovation, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility align,” said Sandeep Seth, CEO of Goltens Worldwide.

Goltens Dubai’s project scope included full hull fabrication, king post construction, and the supply and installation of watertight doors, among other structural components. With the hull completed, the project now moves into outfitting, systems integration, and commissioning before sea trials and delivery.

Once operational, the Captain Arctic will host 36 passengers and 24 crew, offering expedition-style cruising focused on low-impact exploration and biodiversity preservation. The vessel’s compact design and renewable systems allow flexible itineraries and minimal ecological footprint during Arctic and subpolar voyages.

The launch highlights growing collaboration between international shipyards and technology providers aiming to accelerate the maritime sector’s energy transition.
